 | _____CANON CHARACTER NAME: Tenten FANDOM: Naruto CANON SYNOPSIS: Tenten, along with teammates Hyuuga Neji and Rock Lee, is a chuunin-level ninja of Konohagakure. As a child, she aspired to be as great a ninja as Tsunade, the Fifth (and first woman) Hokage. Tenten, Neji, and Lee are led by Maito Gai, and all specialize in taijutsu, or martial arts, rather than genjutsu or ninjutsu (illusions and chakra-based attacks). Tenten, being calmer than Lee and Gai, without Neji's angst-ridden back story, and having no flashy bloodline limit, tends to fade into the background. However, she is actually quite extraordinary in her own right. She is a weapons specialist, with mastery over literally every weapon available to a ninja. Thanks to summoning scrolls she keeps on her, she can also access any and all of these weapons during a fight, firing them off with very nearly 100% accuracy. Though it is Neji who is recognized as the genius of the team, he acknowledges her strength and states that his "ultimate defense" has been honed by sparring with her. In Tenten's first attempt at the chuunin exams, she made it to the semifinals, only to be matched against Temari of Suna. She poured everything she had into fighting the other girl, including her then-best move, Rising Twin Dragons, which allowed her to summon and fire off hundreds of weapons at once, then manipulate all of them so that every one could be thrown again. Nevertheless, Temari countered all of this and beat Tenten quite badly. Tenten recuperated, and after the timeskip is seen as a chuunin, battling Kisame with Team Gai. Her skills have improved to the point where her bomb sends the infamously savage Kisame into a temporary retreat. She also appears to have updated her summoning scrolls, and has obviously honed her expertise in explosives, likely in other areas as well. Beyond her fighting skills, it can be inferred that Tenten is a stable, straightforward person. She's receptive to a pretty face, but does not let romance interfere with her focus, and has proven herself crafty when the need arises. But she does tend to take things at their surface value, which means she occasionally jumps to conclusions. While motivated, she is not very ambitious, accepting Neji's declared genius and never challenging his place as leader of the three. Sometimes, she's too blunt; she's hurt Lee in the past with some unsympathetic comments. Even so, she demonstrates her caring for both him and Neji, and their flawless teamwork shows a deep connection to each other. |
 | _____ONORATA-VERSE BACKGROUND Half Chinese, half Italian, 25-year-old Tenten Marzotti is the daughter of Nuo, a licensed gun seller, and Anthony, latest in a long line of Marzotti men who served as soldati for the Vescovo family. Nuo's job provided the family with some cover from the AMC, and gave Tenten her passion for firearms, blades, and explosives. Unfortunately, Nuo succumbed to lung cancer when Tenten was 15, Anthony dying a few months later in a shootout. Though Anthony had only ever been a lowly general soldati, a Vescovo caporegime who had been his friend stepped in and provided for Tenten, giving her with the wherewithal (apartment, groceries, and so on) to get her high school diploma while keeping Child Services off her back. When Tenten was 18, she entered the Vescovo family as a soldati herself, her father's friend, Frank Attanisio, acting as her sponsor. The three kills (and various other duties) she performed as a soldati were clean and professional, and could have been the makings of a solid reputation as an enforcer, until her career was cut short. One night she went up against someone who was too good for her, and was basically torn apart before Attanisio's men arrived and drove her attacker off. Tenten never even found out the other woman's name, whether she was with the Monacellos, the AMC, or had any affiliation at all, but sometimes she still has nightmares about that night and the way she'd known she was going to die. It took Tenten more than four months to fully recover, but she managed it, and even returned to her martial arts and weapons practice. However, her perspective had been forever altered. She could no longer see the point of literally risking her life for the Vescovos, not when the most important thing was that she stay alive for herself. From then onwards, she would always downplay her fighting skills, even as she honed them in both determination and fear. (Now, she doesn't often feel personally threatened, but when she does, she has a tendency to overkill. By sheer chance, that hasn't yet resulted in a death.) In need of a new job and wanting to stay useful to the Vescovos in some fashion, she went back to her mother's old business contacts, finding many willing to do some black market business. It wasn't easy to get established at first, and she found herself having to prove her weapons expertise again and again to skeptical Vescovos-- even people she had worked with in the past. At the time she swallowed hard and worked through it, but Tenten remains sensitive to doubts of her competence, especially if they are based on how embarrassingly young she looks. Still, she is now one of the most knowledgeable and well-connected figures in the weapons black market of Reggio Calabria. The Vescovo family uses her as a highly reliable weapons dealer, able to find all manner of firearms, explosives, or whatever else might be needed. She is also an expert at customizing guns, forging paper trails, erasing serial numbers, and making her weapons completely untraceable back to her or the Vescovos. In fact, more than one AMC investigative trail has gone cold thanks to her efforts. Tenten cannot get a license to sell-- or, indeed, own-- guns, thanks to her suspected ties to the Vescovos. That hasn't stopped her, of course, but her sense of self-preservation dictates that she operate covertly, out of a stereotypically Chinese storefront dubbed the Lucky Leaf Trading Company. Here she ostensibly tells fortunes, in a shop crowded with "mystical" powders, "ornamental" daggers, unidentifiable bric-a-brac-- nearly all her inventory at her fingertips, in disguise. Not only does she sell weapons here, she buys them too, when they seem worth her time-- like the apparently one-of-a-kind item that crossed her counter four years ago. It seemed to be a 1.5' cube of light-colored wood, with an ornate dragon branded on one side and brass-fitted corners. It was mysteriously heavy, and by sheer luck Tenten found the hidden catch that unfolded the whole thing in smooth clicks and ratchets. What it unfolds into is a sort of weapons stand with amazing capacity. It contains a pair of kodachi, ten throwing knives, the components of an HK416 assault rifle, a Browning HP pistol with two extra magazines, a Colt Python revolver, fifty .357 Magnum rounds, two nunchaku, and five hand grenades, all presented for easy access in a matter of seconds. Tenten feels much safer with it around, and though it can't be carted everywhere she may sometimes lug it places with her if possible, if she really feels threatened. Aside from this, she always carries Taurus PT145 pistol, a switchblade in her belt, a long dagger in her boot, and sometimes, in a pocket or handbag, a hand grenade. She is also very fond of her 9mm MP5K, a submachine gun a little too big to conceal on her person on an everyday basis, but compact enough to hide under the arm or just about anywhere in a room. Attanisio died with most of his unit in a violent confrontation with the AMC two years ago, and since then, there hasn't been anyone in the Vescovo family that Tenten has confided in. She is quite friendly and generally straightforward, but reticent about her personal goals and plans. If the Capo and Sotto Capo see her as having been rescued by the family, Tenten will certainly agree with them-- but wherever the money came from, she remembers it as having been given to her by Attanisio, and with him gone, there is no one she fully swears allegiance to. Her first priority, now as ever, is herself. She's happy to sell weapons to neutrals, and, if the price is exceptional, will carefully vend to certain Monacellos, provided the transaction is handled with maximum discretion. Should worst come to worst, she always makes sure she can maintain some plausible deniability and swear she thought they were neutrals. She will not sell to the AMC if she realizes who they are, instead pretending that her store really is just a fortunetelling shop. These days, everyone sees her as a resource, not a fighter. Nevertheless, high-ranking members of the family who saw or heard of her kills six years ago probably retain some "suspicion of extreme competence" on her part. And anyway, it would be foolish to assume that Tenten spends her days brokering weapons deals without honing her own expertise in the use of such weapons. |
